Gospel of Thomas, Introduction

Much of what Thomas writes is clear for one who has seen. Otherwise, one is forced to try to shoehorn him, and his Jesus, into a canonical size 4 gospel.

"These are the hidden sayings that the living Jesus spoke and that …Thomas wrote down."

Hidden. Much of what Jesus said or taught was not for public consumption.  One of the regular gospels has Jesus saying that he purposely taught in parables so that people wouldn't get it. What is behind that? Our image of Jesus is of one in the midst of huge crowds daily. However, quite often, these crowds mis-hear his message, leading to misunderstanding of his mission, his kingdom, and his heart.

Clear spiritual teaching always recognizes and relies on the spiritual truth that like attracts like. Jesus picked a ragtag bunch of followers, but these men and women were ripe for the picking. Only those primed for the message would understand the message. This has never changed.  When you hear the Truth spoken or taught, irregardless of the teacher,  your heart is stirred because it knows the sound of Truth. When you are searching, you will be found. Like attracts like. If if seems hidden, then it must seem so to the one who isn't ready.

Hiddenness for me also brings to mind the Tao. The Tao of which can be spoken is not the true Tao.  Because Thomas brings these hidden sayings to light, they are now no longer hidden. Is something lost to our ears? Is there a transmission which goes beyond merely hearing of these sayings?
